Job Description

DEPARTMENT: Department of Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery, UVa, UPG
REPORTS TO: Chief Physician Assistant

GENERAL SUMMARY:
The incumbent will assist in the medical and surgical care of patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting as outlined in the Principal Duties and Responsibilities below and will participate in all aspects of patient care as indicated. The incumbent will have direct reporting responsibility to the Attending Physician for all duties, but will also provide ancillary support to other physicians within the Department.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Essential Functions of the Job:Inpatient Wards (10%):
 Completes individual daily rounds on all inpatients and documents medical plan of care
 Participates in rounding with TCV Service several times per week
 Provides routine medical management! of inpatient care including ordering of diagnostic tests, lab! s, x-rays, medications (within the scope of the PA license) and nutrition
 Participates in multidisciplinary rounds and communication of treatment plans with physicians, nursing staff and families.
 Conducts minor procedures (under the direction and supervision of the Attending Physician), including: chest tubes, indwelling venous and arterial catheters, Swan-Ganz catheters, nasogastric tubes, bladder catheters, lumbar punctures, thoracentesis, bronchoscopy, intubation, IABP management
 Initiates appropriate emergency care until the arrival of the supervising physician.
 Performs cardiac and vascular inpatient consults.

Surgery (60%):
 Prepares patients for surgery, including positioning, skin preparation and administration of local anesthetic
 Functions as first or second assistant in the operating room including surgical exposure, suturing and closure
 Performs open and endoscopic vein harvesting and arteria! l conduit harvest
 Assists in the initiation of cardiopulmonary bypass

Outpatient Clinics (30%):
 Attends outpatient clinic and participates in initial evaluation and longitudinal care
 Obtains medical history and physical examination
 Completes appropriate documentation of all evaluations, care, and services rendered in the medical record
 Refers medically-unstable, surgical candidates for preoperative clearance
 Expedites disposition by identifying patient and family issues for referral to appropriate personnel (transportation, housing, psychosocial, financial or caregiver)
 Performs pre-and post-operative patient education to patients and their families
 Responds to telephone inquiries on discharged patients and provides appropriate medical care or counseling
 Communicates with referring or primary care physicians regarding patient care and treatment
 Provides follow-up and health maint! enance care including the appropriate adjustment of medications in acco! rdance with established protocols or in response to specific instructions from the Attending Physician
Completes other tasks as requested.

Non-Essential Functions of the Job:
 Acts as a resource person throughout the hospital and community for information on cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery
 Participates in clinical research and provides staff education for new protocols being introduced

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):Education:
 Physician Assistant Degree
 Certification by NCCPA
 Licensure or eligible for licensure as a Physician’s Assistant in the State of Virginia

Experience:
 Minimum of one year experience working in a health care setting preferred
 Experience working in a functional surgical department a plus

Skills:
 Intermediate knowledge of and experience utilizing a personal computer
 Intermediate! word processing skills required
