Salem VA Medical Center (SVAMC)

is seeking

a full-time Dentist to join its experienced staff of physicians and health professionals as the Chief of Dental Service at the Medical Center. As Chief of Dental Service, the successful candidate will be responsible for oversight and supervision of all personnel assigned to the service, as well as for providing either general dentistry or specialty services consistent with the individualÂ's area of practice.

Salem VA Medical Center, located in the Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), is a 298-bed, Joint Commission accredited, complexity level 1C facility serving Veterans in southwestern Virginia. SVAMC is located in Salem, Virginia with community based outpatient clinics in Lynchburg, Wytheville, Staunton, Danville, and Tazewell. SVAMC's primary service area includes 2! 6 counties representing over 8,800 sq. miles with a population! of over 112,500 Veterans. SVAMC provides primary care and specialty care with a broad scope of available clinical services. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, mental health, extended care and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, and supportive and social services.

NOTE:
Dentists employed by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) are paid commensurate with education, experience and qualifications, using VAÂ's market-based physician pay system.

Candidate's education and experience will be reviewed by a Compensation Panel in determining the salary of the applicant selected. The recommended salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy.

Salary will be based! on the specialty practice of the individual selected within the follow! ing ranges:

General Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Other Specialties: $120,000 - $235,000

·

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery: $135,000 - $285,000

Recruitment or Relocation Incentive may be authorized.

Education Debt Reduction Program may be authorized.

DUTIES:
TOUR OF DUTY:
Monday - Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The successful candidate! will function as the Chief of Dental Service at Salem VAMC.

This individual will be responsible for performing duties to include, but not limited to the following:

·

Provides general dentistry and/or specialty services appropriate to individualÂ's area of practice;

·

Procedures expected may include dental examinations, diagnosis, routine and complex restoration, simple and complex extractions; prosthetic dentistry including immediate, partial and full dentures, crowns, and fixed bridges; and routine endodontic procedures on single and simple multi-canalled teeth, routine and surgical periodontal procedures, and restoration of implants;

·

Supervision and oversight of all personnel assigned to the Dental Service staff;

·

Ensures Dental Service compliance with all applicable regulations and policies;

·

Develops local policies and procedures relating to the administration an! d provision of dental services to Veterans;

·

Serves! as local liaison to professional dental organizations, other federal and private dental providers, and to other departments within the medical center;

·

Manages affiliation and residency programs;

·

Administers the Outpatient Non-VA Dental Care Program in cooperation with the local business office; and

·

Ensures that all providers develop clearly defined and documented treatment plans consistent with the appropriate scope of care for the patientÂ's classification.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Candidate must meet the appropriate qualification standard for Dentists as defined by VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G3.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Citizenship.

Candidate must be a citizen of the United States.

Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005! , Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, Paragraph 3g.

Licensure.

Applicant must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

English Language Proficiency.

Dentists appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), 7407(d).

Residency or Comparable Experience.

Candidates must have completed at least one postgraduate year of hospital training in the form of an approved residency program (general practice or specialty), or possess comparable experience as a dentist member of a hospital medical staff actively involved in hospital dental care.

DENTIST REQUIREMENTS FOR! EDUCATION:
Degree of doctor of dental surgery or dental medici! ne resulting from a course of education in dentistry.

The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Approved schools are:
·

United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association, in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.

·

Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical requirements of this position include occasional lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion, stooping, and m! anual dexterity and frequent use of hands. The mental/sensory requireme! nts include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be an occasional need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials.
