Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center, Richmond, Virginia, is actively seeking a full-time board certified physician for the position of Deputy Chief of Staff. The medical center is a 427-bed tertiary care, teaching facility closely affiliated with! the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. We a! re a teaching hospital, with modern technology that supports our education and research mission.

Background and-or security investigation required DUTIES:
The Deputy Chief of Staff is accountable to the Chief of Staff of the McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. The Deputy Chief of Staff is responsible for the management and operation of all clinical programs and services as directed by the Chief of Staff. The provision of clinical services include a very active transplan! t program (heart, liver); the largest acute spinal cord injury center in the VA system; a poly-trauma unit (traumatic brain injury center); Parkinson's Disease Research, Education, and Clinic Center (PADRECC); a Geriatrics & Extended Care Unit (Center of Excellence); a research program (focusing on clinical trials); strong residency training program (primary affiliate Virginia Commonwealth University); and Hospice Unit. The Richmond VAMC is a leader in performance improvement and patient safety.

Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care, and long-term care. Expertise is available in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, hematology/oncology, radiation oncology, radiology including PET scanner, dialysis, cardiology, endocrinology (Diabetes Center of Excellence), dentistry, spinal cord injury, and hospice. We have 3 community based outpatient clinics in Fredericksburg, Charlottesville and Empori! a, Virginia.

The preferred applicant has an extensive record o! f leadership as a clinician and educator and exceptional health care operations and financial management abilities in a tertiary care setting. Knowledge of Joint Commission and other accrediting bodies is essential. Research experience is a plus. As a member of the Executive Leadership team, the preferred applicant must be a skilled interpersonal communicator and have the ability to promote medical staff excellence as well as meet performance measure goals while utilizing the most cost-effective methodology. The applicant should be eligible for academic appointment at the associate or full professor level, and is expected to practice medicine at the Richmond VAMC in his or her field.

! EDUCATION:
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: ( 1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted. (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. (3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

LICENSURE:
Board Eligible/Board Certified and possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a! State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the Dist! rict of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.
