Job Sum! mary:
The Pre-admission Testing Nurse Practitioner is responsible for the elective perioperative process for surgical patients at Mary Washington Hospital. The Nurse Practitioner conducts comprehensive health assessments demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of complex responses of individuals to actual or potential health problems. The Nurse Practitioner functions professionally under a practice agreement with the supervising physician and operationally under the Nurse Manager of Preadmission Testing and Same Day Surgery.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
Supports the mission and vision of the hospital by providing leadership to the perioperative process including improvements to the clinical and satisfaction outcomes.
Provides clinical expertise, leadership, consultation, teaching, and research to the patients and physicians of the hospital. The nurse will utilize in-depth k! nowledge to drive improvements through various roles and allia! nces.
Works autonomously and collaboratively with physicians, surgeons, anesthesiology, nursing, and ancillary directors and staff to improve the clinical outcomes and processes of care for all patients undergoing perioperative services.
Integrates research and management, leadership and consultation into the clinical role and functions in collegial relationships with nursing peers, physicians, professionals and others who influence the health care environment.
Conducts comprehensive health assessments demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of complex responses of individuals to actual or potential health problems.
Formulates clinical decisions to manage acute and chronic illnesses prior to surgery.
Works collaboratively with consulting physician to optimize patients' health status prior to surgery.
Provides health care in accordance with standards of practice as outlined by the national and ! state regulatory agencies.

Other Functions:
Co-champion for all projects related to implementation of evidence-based, standardized care to achieve statistically significantly better than expected outcomes.
Facilitate compliance with order sets and protocols endorsed by the Surgical Department.
Establish prioritization method for assessing and following all patients admitted through pre-Admission Testing.
Work collaboratively to establish a medical co-management program and ensure a timely and appropriate assessment process for each surgical candidate, as endorsed by the medical staff.
Assess and evaluate health status of individuals: collect objective and subjective data, analyze, validate, record, and report findings.
Order, perform, and interpret indicated and appropriate diagnostic studies (e.g., lab tests, x-rays, EKGs)
Order, review and recommend other treatments as indicated.
Review, manage and recommend medicatio! ns and other therapy optimization as indicated.
Ensure follow-up te! sting is completed as indicated.
Facilitate a process to collaborate, review cases and findings with the consulting physician for any further recommendations.
Ensure that surgeon is informed of findings and authorization status.
Prescribes medications as required to optimize patients’ condition and as defined by the Board of Nursing.
Obtain, record and dictate medical histories. Perform, record and dictate physical examinations
Collaborate with OR, PACU, SDS, and Unit managers to ensure that effective transition are in place for patients.
Lead and participate on performance improvements teams: i.e. pain management, DVT prophylaxis, delirium prevention, etc. Lead or co-lead improvement strategies in areas of performance that are below benchmarks.
Provide education for nursing and ancillary staff, in conjunction with the Clinical Education Department, to promote best practices. Provide education in an informal setting on the nursing units ! in real time.
Participate in development, review, and revision of related Policies, Procedures, and protocols.
Active participant in regular meetings and Case Conference meetings as required.
Attend other meetings as requested to enhance outcomes for all patients.

Qualifications:
Graduate of approved Nurse Practitioner program with certification. MSN required
A minimum of three years Advanced Practice Nurse experience within an Adult Medicine and/or knowledge of perioperative services.
Currently licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in Virginia.
Current approved prescriptive authority in Virginia.
Must be able to work independently, displaying initiative, critical thinking and appropriate judgment as well as work effectively as a team member in providing a collaborative approach to patient evaluation and care.
Excellent interpersonal skills in working and communicating with patients, families, and professional staff.
Sound ! technical skills and a knowledge and understanding of research findings! to support evidence based practice.
Demonstrates commitment to quality outcomes.
