The R e s e a rc h and Outcomes Specialist is re sp o nsible f or promoting the post-operative program through educational and outreach initiativ! es. The Specialist will work with both international and local Operation Smile staff to coordinate the post-operative program, which involves the follow-up of patients at three specific times after their surgeries to determine their results and progress. The Research and Outcomes Specialist will work to monitor and to detect patientsâ surgical outcomes and surgeonsâ technical skills through data management and analysis. He/she will work to ensure quality data is collected, post-operative program logistics are coordinated, and post-operative team members are well trained and educated about their role in the post-operative program. The Specialist will also assist with research projects as they relate to Operation Smileâs mission and vision.
Essential Functions:
Aid in the m a n a g e m e nt of the Out c om e s D a t a b a s e , wh e r e a ll the p a ti e nt o ut c om e s and medical record information a r e stored and analyzed f or monito r ing a nd ! s u r v e ill a n c e of complications, surgical outcomes, tec! hniques, etc.
Compil e d a ta a nd perform basic st a tisti ca l a n a l y s e s, a s re qui r e d f or int e r n a l out c om e s a n a l y sis and monitoring.
Communicate with local foundations to ensure the proper post-operative organizational goals are being met by establishing relationships with local staff and providing education, follow-up tools and logistical support, as needed.
Communicate constantly with international program coordinators to champion the post-operative program and to identify the post-operative challenges in each country.
Compile post-operative data (images, electronic medical records, and post-operative forms) to create surgical outcomes evaluations.
Train and oversee interns who aid with data processing.
Communicate with surgeons, Regional Medical Directors, Regional Managers, etc. the surgical outcomes of specific missions.
Train and oversee the Outcomes Data Coordinators, who live ! in-country and who are responsible for collecting the post-operative data from their region.
Aid in the development of new post-operative material, outreach protocols, etc. to grow and to improve the post-operative program.
Participate in and/or initiate research projects as they align with departmental and organizational goals, ensuring that any new research initiatives adhere to Operation Smileâs medical policies and procedures and are fully compliant with acceptable ethical norms governing clinical and non-clinical research.

Collaborate with the Outcomes Data Specialist, who oversees the patient images, to ensure proper patient imaging collection and photo quality.
Keep databases and spreadsheets up-to-date in order to submit monthly reports and ai! d in last minute requests.
Aid with the compilation of data an! d statistical analyses as required for research projects.
International travel is sometimes required.
Coordination of research projects is sometimes required.
Experience Required (education/work) :

Characteristics/Skills Required:

Must be a self-starter and capable of working with little direct supervision.
Understanding of databases and statistical analysis.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Access,Word, Excel, Powerpoint).

Adobe Photoshop/camera and Filemaker skills helpful.
Foreign Language proficiency a plus.
