Registered Nurse - General Surgery

Location: Portsmouth Virginia

Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain a government security clearance
Have education as follows:! Either (a), a bachelor's degree in Nursing; or (b) a diploma graduate in Nursing; or (c) an associate degree in Nursing from a National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) accredited program.
Possess current unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Have obtained the minimum of 1 year full-time experience working in a surgical unit or emergency room of similar size and complexity within the last 2 years.
Possess and maintain at all times, current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS). The American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course is the only program accepted.
Will not accept Med/Surg RNs for this position. Must have OR experience.

Scheduling details:
The RNs shall provide services during day, evening, and night shifts that are from 8.5 to 12.5 hours in duration per day (to in! clude an uncompensated .5 hour meal break). The inpatient unit! s operate 24-hours per day, 7-days per week, 365 days per year.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Evaluate assignments based on patient acuity, unique needs of the patient, equipment requirements, and competency of staff and recommend changes based on their experience and patient needs.
Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and collaborate with team members to ensure the patient's needs are addressed across the continuum of care, and that the plan of care is revised based on on-going assessment of the patient's response to treatment.
Set up, operate and monitor equipment used in the care of patients.
Identify equipment malfunction, take appropriate action to remove faulty equipment, take action to have equipment restored to working condition, and file reports of equipment malfunction and repair status, as required.
Use Command resources efficiently and effectively, and make recommendations for equipment procurement b! ased on technological advances that are shown to be more efficient and effective.
Write reports that are professional, accurate, well researched, and in the form of a finished product.
Ensure established documentation protocols are followed.
Teach in a manner that is easily understood and appropriate to the level of the audience.
Facilitate coordination of medical/nursing/allied health care for patients with multiple diagnoses/problems/complaints and liaison with the appropriate facility and community resources to ensure continuity of care, patient satisfaction, system improvement, and command mission.
Systematically monitor effectiveness of practice through client database and outcomes evaluation. Synthesize and use the results of these evaluations to make or recommend changes including policy, procedure or protocol documentation.
