The medical center has provided state-of-the-art medical care for residents of the Roanoke Valley and Southwest Virginia for more than 100 years. In addition to three sister facilities, we are now an integrated-delivery health system that also includes several outpatient centers, two cancer centers, and hundreds of physicians who partner with us through various affiliation models.

Our family of HCA Hospitals in Southwest Virginia has recently become the first and only health system in the region to have fully accredited Chest Pain Centers at all of its hospitals. Additionally, LGMC is ranked in the top 10% nationwide for quality heart attack and heart failure care, pneumonia care, and surgical care-infection prevention. Our two cancer centers lead the fight against cancer, with both centers being accredited by the American College of Surgeon's Commission on Cancer.SPECIFIC ELEME! NTS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Circulates cases as it relates to! the unit scope of care.Shows knowledge of circulating components/responsibilities as evidenced by completion of skills checklist. Checks chart for complete and accurate data.

Utilizes established Standards of Care. Applies principles of infection control and standard and transmission based precautions utilizing aseptic technique. Maintains a safe environment for personnel and patients. Plans, organizes and sets appropriate priorities for smooth operation and efficient flow pattern in the assigned operating room.

Documents accurately and completely including charges. Submits Plans of Care as needed. Maintains accurate counts according to policy. Able to function in the role of primary circulator, assuming responsibility for documentation and attending to needs of other staff members, anesthesia, surgeon, and patient.

Assumes responsibility to check the following cases of the day for accuracy and location of needed instrumentation. Reviews new Poli! cy and Procedure as needed. Submits plans to improve environmental safety. Requests assignment to do cases to complete skills checklist.Scrubs cases as it relates to the unit scope of care.

Monitors and controls the sterile field. Dons appropriate attire required by hospital and OSHA policies. Able to create and maintain a sterile field. Able to scrub routine cases with no assistance.

Demonstrates knowledge of surgical anatomy and understanding of instrumentation and procedures. Does not divert attention from the operative field. Able to anticipate basic needs of surgeon/assistant. Able to anticipate when to initiate closing counts.

Labels all medications on the sterile field. Able to scrub independently on small/moderate cases. Able to anticipate needs of the surgeon. Demonstrates a complete knowledge of instrumentation/sequence of procedure.

Exercises sound judgment and decision making skills on behalf of patient, self, and peers.Able t! o identify potential problems and critical situations involving staff a! nd visitors and reports to Clinical Coordinator. Identifies potential problems and critical situations involving patients, staff and visitors. Gathers factual, objective information. Intervenes in a professional manner.

Demonstrates the ability for making appropriate clinical decisions and maintains accountability for decisions made. Report patient care or management problems to Charge Nurse or Assistant Director. Is aware of personal abilities and limitations and the knowledge of when to seek assistance from appropriate source persons. Functions effectively and working towards independently.

Volunteers to stay when needed.Pursues opportunities to enhance personal and/or professional growth. Maintains current BLS for Healthcare Provider training. Completes mandatory education requirements. Attends all in-services/ staff meetings on scheduled work days .Reviews minutes of meetings held on non-scheduled days..

Keeps skills checklist up-to-date. Purs! ues continuing education outside of hospital. . Attends at least one seminar relative to job description.

Participates on nursing committee. Communicates effectively with staff, peers, physicians, and other departments.Maintains open communication to all team members and other hospital personnel. Communicates in a positive manner. Utilizes appropriate channels of communication.

Communicates accurate and appropriate information concerning patient's needs. Is customer service oriented and strives to meet high standards of nursing care. Identifies and assists in departmental issues. Is consistently positive, no matter what the situation.

Is a role model to peers. Uses tact, sensitivity, sound judgment and professional attitude at all times when relating to patient, families and co-workers.Organizes work to complete duties efficiently and effectively. Strives to facilitate rapid turnovers between cases. Uses 'discretionary time' to increase knowledge ! of equipment or procedures.

Restocks assigned room before end ! of shift.. Demonstrates competency through observed practice and completion of annual skills lab and mandatory in-services. Takes responsibility for scheduling self for in-services and skills lab. Independently seeks out additional assignments, assisting staff in rooms - second circulation; stocking rooms for others.

Looking up procedure for next day and being prepared.Serves as a professional member of the OR team.Able to share knowledge with other staff members. Able to identify conflicts with staff, preceptor or surgeon. Able to be flexible in response to changes in assignments/course of day etc. Assists management in the implementation of new policies and procedures.

Is available and accessible when on duty and on call (be at the Hospital in 30 minutes or less). Collaborates with Clinical coordinator to coordinate lunch and breaks for room staff. Assists others with minimum direction. Volunteers to work beyond shift to finish cases when needed.
Education element Initiates patient teaching including family and/or significant others when appropriate. Orients patient to O.R. Introduces other team members. Answers patient/significant others questions as appropriate.

Serves on departmental or facility wide committee.Adheres to hospital policies and procedures, supports the mission of the hospital.Reports for duty as scheduled and on time. Adheres to Hospital & Department dress codes. Adheres to hospital parking policy. Respects patients' rights to confidentiality.

Understands and supports the philosophy, purposes, policies, & procedures and standards of the hospital and the department. Adheres to JCAHO and OSHA regulatory standards. Reviews new policies and procedures. Encourages others to comply with regulatory requirements.

Accomplishes goals set in prior evaluation.REQUIREMENTS: EXPERIENCERequired - Nursing and medical knowledge of equipment and supplies or previous experience as ! an Open Heart O.R. nurse.Preferred - Experience working in the Open Hear! t O.R.EDUCATIONRequired - Graduate of accredited school of nursing with current license in the State of VA.
