GENERAL SUMMARY:
The physician assistant for the Foot and Ankle Division of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery will assist in medical and surgical care of foot and ankle patients in the outpatient setting as outlined in the Principal Duties and Responsibilities below and will participate in aspects of patient care as indicated. This job description is dynamic and may be subject to periodic changes by the Attending Physician and Department Supervisor in conjunction with the PA as the needs of the service evolve. Changes will be discussed in periodic review meetings with the Physician, PA, and Supervisor and a written update of the duties and responsibilities will be made available.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Essential Functions of the Job:!
Surgery (30%)
1. Prepare patients for surgery, in! cluding education, positioning, skin preparation and administration of local anesthetic, and preparation of equipment
2. Function as first or second assistant in the operating room including performing surgical exposure, surgical dissections, wound irrigation and debridements, closure of wounds, harvesting of autologous graft materials, application of dressings and immobilization devices
3. Assist with use of monitoring devices, including radiographic equipment
4. Assist with pre and post surgery documentation
5. Assist in communicating with family members following surgeries, providing updates and education as appropriate

Outpatient Clinics (60%)
1. Attend outpatient clinic and participates in initial evaluation and longitudinal care
2. Obtain medical history and perform physical examination
3. Develop and implement plan of care with attending supervision
4. Complete appropriate documentation of all evaluations, care, and services r! endered in the medical record
5. Make appropriate referral for consultations
6. Provide pre-and post-operative patient education to patients and their families
7. Provide follow-up care including the appropriate adjustment of medications in accordance with established protocols or in response to specific instructions from the Attending Physician
8. Prescription of medications to accomplish the plan of treatment
9. Provide routine medical management of outpatient care including ordering of diagnostic tests, labs, x-rays, medications (within the scope of the PA license) and managing adjunctive care
10. Conduct procedures (under direction and appropriate level of supervision of the Attending Physician), including but not limited to: placement of skeletal hardware, management of closed fractures, debridement of wounds, aspiration/injection of bursa, joints, tenosynovia, anatomic compartments, cysts
11. Initiate appropriate emergency care in the inpat! ient and outpatient setting until the arrival of the supervising physic! ian
12. Manage discharge of outpatients with appropriate disposition, follow-up planning, adjunctive therapy management and education
13. Make assessment of emergency conditions and, in conjunction with attending physician, implement management

Administration & Education (10%)
1. Attend foot and ankle service specific educational conferences on a weekly basis and other conferences on occasion as requested by the Attending Physician
2. Review, edit, and sign all clinic note dictations on a weekly basis
3. Teach other providers as appropriate for level of experience
4. Attend CME conferences to maintain NCCPA certification and Virginia State PA licensing
5. Attend other foot and ankle service specific CME as requested
6. Place calls to outpatients (excluding hospitalized/institutionalized patients) who have undergone surgery each week to facilitate education, answer questions, and address concerns
7. Update forms used in clinic on ! a routine basis

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):Education:

  • Physician Assistant Degree
  • Certification by NCCPA
  • Licensure or eligible for licensing as a Physician’s Assistant in the State of Virginia
Knowledge and skills:
 Intermediate knowledge of Word Processing and PC usage.
 Ability to function with limited direct supervision.
