The Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for the position of ! hospital director for the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center. The college seeks a charismatic individual with practical experience in equine practice and administration of a referral hospital. The Equine Medical Center is developing new models for future delivery of equine medicine in a referral environment. The new Director will lead this dynamic change through all aspects of review, planning and implementation. The position requires creativity and leadership skills based in communications, business management, and supervision of clinicians and technical personnel in an equine specialty practice. The Directorship is a full time administrative position and reports to the Dean of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at the main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia.

The hospital is staffed with veterinary technicians for 24 hour care of cases. Equipment is available for anesthesia, arthroscopy, fracture repair, laser surgery, laparoscopy, ul! trasonography, scintigraphy, MRI, video endoscopy, neonatal in! tensive care, fluoroscopy, digital and computed radiography, electrodiagnostics, and critical care. The caseload is varied and includes horses used for racing, hunting, eventing, jumping, show, trail, pleasure riding and breeding with broad representation of equine lameness and diseases averaging 2500 patients per year via the combined medicine and surgery services. The hospital specializes in emergency care, lameness, diagnosis of poor performance, metabolic and infectious diseases and regenerative medicine. The center's faculty include internationally recognized specialists in surgery, internal medicine and reproduction. The center's mission includes teaching, research and clinical service. Fourth year veterinary students tracking in equine studies as a part of their 4th-year training attend the center in 3-week rotations throughout the year. Additionally there are four residents in three-year training programs in surgery and medicine combined with a graduate program requ! iring studies toward a Master of Science degree. The director serves as the center's representative on the college executive board and is responsible for the center's budget, human resources and facilities maintenance. The director also serves as an ambassador for the school and the profession in the equine community, which includes fund raising for support of the center's programs. As liaison to the Equine Medical Center council, the director reports on projects, prioritizes funding needs and receives recommendation based on communications from the regional equine community.

Required Qualifications

Candidates will be evaluated on the following professional and personal characteristics: a record of scholarship that qualifies the candidate for appoi! ntment at the rank of associate or full professor; appointment my be te! nure-track or clinical track depending on negotiations; clinical expertise in an area of equine medicine; evidence of administrative experience, which includes budget and personnel management, excellent communication skills; experience in fundraising, a personal interest and experience in participation in the equine industry; a vision of the role of the teaching hospital in the future of veterinary education; ability to meld teaching and research activities with a busy clinical caseload;. Candidates must hold the earned degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent. Evidence of formal education or experience in business management is desirable.
