Marine Atlantic is currently accepting applications for a Machinist to work with our Facilities Management Department in Port aux Basques.

Reporting to the Plant Maintenance Supervisor, Machinists will perform tasks to sustain the terminal onshore preventative maintenance program as outlined in the preventative maintenance job plans, ensuring minimum down time with a cost-effective approach to vessel schedules and operational requirements whether planned or unplanned.

Machinists are responsible for maintaining onshore based terminal equipment, including wharf and transfer bridges, facilities, terminal support vehicles and emergency generators. Machinists also must interpret drawings, equipment service and operation manuals, obtain cost estimates, make sketches, work at heights, order materials, and complete daily time reports. Machinists set up and operate a variety of machine tools to cut or grind metal, plastic, or other materials to make or modify parts or products with precise dimensions, as well as

perform welding services when required.

Additional Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Work diligently to promote a safe and inclusive working environment.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, charts and tables, or study sample parts to determine machining operation to be performed. Plan best sequence of operations.
  • Compute dimensions and tolerances, and measure and lay out work pieces
  • Set up, operate and maintain a variety of machine tools.
  • Non-repetitive machining operations such as sawing, turning, milling, boring, planning, drilling, precision grinding, and other operations.
  • Fit and assemble machined metal parts and subassemblies using hand and power tools.
  • Verify dimensions of products for accuracy and conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments.
  • Set up and program machining tools.
  • Participate in lubrication and welding duties.
  • Execute tasks as outlined in preventive maintenance job plans.
  • Fuel vessels and offloading fuel from bulk carriers/tankers.
  • Maintain terminal support vehicles.
  • Operate the Loading Ramps as required.

What qualifications do I need to be considered for this opportunity?

Education and Experience

  • Red Seal Journeyperson certificate in one of the following trades: Machinist/Millwright (Industrial Mechanic) and/or related applicable trade with qualifications obtained through a reputable Apprentice Training Program
  • Must hold a valid Class 5 Driver's License with air brake endorsement
  • 3-5 years of experience working in an industrial environment

Hourly Rate: $35.764
