Salem VA Medical Center is seeking a full-time physician to join its experienced staff of physicians and health professionals as the Chief, Extended Care and Geriatrics Service at the medical center. This position is responsible for the clinical, administrative, and programmatic oversight for inpatient and outpatient programs of the Service, including Community Residential Care, Contract Adult Day Health Care, Contract Nursing Homes, Respite Care, Home Health Aide, Home Telehealth, Home Base Primary Care, ! and two Community Living Centers one of which contains an embe! dded Hospice/Palliative Care Unit.

Salem VA Medical Center, located in the Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), is a 298-bed, Joint Commission accredited, complexity level 1C facility serving Veterans in southwestern Virginia.SVAMC is located in Salem, Virginia with community based outpatient clinics in Lynchburg, Wytheville, Staunton, Danville, and Tazewell.SVAMC's primary service area includes 26 counties representing over 8,800 sq. miles with a population of over 112,500 Veterans.SVAMC provides primary care and specialty care with a broad scope of available clinical services. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, mental health, extended care and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, and supportive and social services.

Salem VA Medical Center is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as educatio! n and research.SVAMC maintains three active medical school affiliations with the University Of Virginia School Of Medicine, the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine; nine academic affiliations with prominent regional Nursing Schools;andover 80 academic affiliations with various colleges and universities to promote the training of associated health professions. Required Skills:BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizenship. Candidate must be a citizen of the United States.

Licensure. Applicant must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

English Language Proficiency. Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), 7407(d).

Physical Requirements. The physical requirements of this position include occasional lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion,and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly,reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace c! an vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of mult! iple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be an occasionalneed to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials.

Post-Graduate Residency. Candidate must have completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, in a residency program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.

PHYSICIAN REQUIREMENTS FOR EDUCATION: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

In addition to the basic qualifications required for this position, the following additional qualifications are necessary for this position:

Candidateshould be board certified, at a minimum,in Internal Medicine or a related specialty.
