Salem VA Medical Center is seekinga full-time Psychiatrist to join its experienced staff of physicians and health professionals in the Mental Health Service Line at the Medical Center. The selected candidate will be responsible for providing comprehensive acute psychiatric care for the Medical Centers inpatient Veteran population. In addition to this positions focus on the acute inpatient psychiatric needs of the Medical Center, the successful candidate will also be heavily involved with the clinical training and supervision of medical students and residents.
Salem VA Medical Center, located in the Mid-Atlantic H! ealth Care Network (VISN 6), is a Joint Commission accredited, complexity level 1C facility serving Veterans in southwestern Virginia.SVAMC is located in Salem, Virginia with community based outpatient clinics in Lynchburg, Wytheville, Staunton, Danville, and Tazewell.SVAMC's primary service area includes 26 counties representing over 8,800 sq. miles with a population of over 112,500 Veterans.SVAMC provides primary care and specialty care with a broad scope of available clinical services. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, mental health, extended care and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, and supportive and social services.

Salem VA Medical Center is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research.SVAMC maintains three active medical school affiliations with the University Of Virginia Sch! ool Of Medicine, the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine; nine academic affiliations with prominent regional Nursing Schools;andover 80 academic affiliations with various colleges and universities to promote the training of associated health professions. Required Skills:BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizenship. Candidate must be! a citizen of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, Paragraph 3g.

Education. Candidates must possess a degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

Licensure. Applicant must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

English Language Proficiency. Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), 7407(d).

Post-Graduate Residency. Candidate must have completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, in a residency program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it ! was completed. Approved residencies are:
1. Those approved by the C! ouncil on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or
2.Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.
