JOB SUMMARY The OPO Surgical Specialist is responsible for ensuring that all aspects of the surgical organ recovery are performed to optimal levels and that mandatory and job specific SOPs are followed by LifeNet Health Staff and transplant recovery surgeons to ensure quality outcomes. As a clinical services team member, the OPO Surgical Specialist participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility for the overall success of the team in achieving departmental goals. The OPO Surgical Specialist will perform their job in a manner that exemplifies the mission, attributes and values of LifeNet Health on a continuous basis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1.Provides Certified Surgical Assistant Services to recovery surgeon (s) and transplant coordinators including first assist role during abdominal and cardiothoracic organ recoveries. 2.Ensures that all aspects of surgical organ recovery are performed to optimal levels and that mandatory and job specific SOPs are followed by staff to ensure quality outcomes 3.Works collaboratively with Tissue Recovery Managers to ensure proficiency of tissue recovery specialists assisting the OPO with kidney perfusion and surgical recovery of thoracic and abdominal organs. 4.Provides Certified Surgical Assistant services for independent recovery of organs and tissues for research and medical therapy purposes. 5.Maintains stocking and preparation of supplies necessary for self contained organ recovery operations. 6.Tracks and maintains surgical non-conformances data and transplant surgeon/physician survey results. Processes customer complaints and other customer service issues and initiates corrective actions. 7.Adheres to the clinical services specific call schedule. 8.Performs other duties as assigned or requested. 9.Complies with LifeNet Health’s Quality Systems and Corporate Compliance programs. 10.Adheres to LifeNet Health’s attendance policy through regular and prompt attendance.

CHALLENGES, DECISION MAKING AND RECOMMENDATIONS Requires following somewhat defined procedures. Problems encountered are somewhat complex. Requires making decisions about own work and working independently. Makes independent decisions daily during Organ Recovery regarding anatomical surgical recovery technique/approach, the identification of suspicious lesions to be biopsied or determine if further follow up is needed, determining if Kidneys are unable to be pumped due to anatomical/surgical issues, determining research organ suitability upon visualization of organ insitu, and repairing kidney if needed. Responsible for time out and DCD role/responsibility huddle on a case by case basis. Makes recommendations to Anesthesiologist regarding donor fluid volume status and whether/how to treat on a case by case basis. Works with surgeons to control excess bleeding, as needed on a case by case basis.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 1. Two-year College or vocational training. 2. Ability to perform routine tasks and demonstrate basic analytical skills. 3. Proficiency with basic and complex business machines (computers, etc.) 4. Specialized, technical skills. 5. Knowledge of moderately complex procedures and practices of a specific function. 6. Knowledge of procedures and services of related areas 7. Knowledge of complex and diversified procedures, practices, and policies. 8. 4â€"7 years of related work experience. 9. Surgical Assistant certification (National Surgical Assistant Association).
