Job Description
POSITION TITLE: Nurse Practitioner (Surgery/Neurosurgery)
JOB CODE: C1008
LEVEL/FLSA: AHP, Exempt
DEPARTMENT: Surgery Department Private Clinics, UVa, UPG
REPORTS TO: Clinical Department Head, UVa Clinic

GENERAL SUMMARY: The incumbent will function under the Professional Standards of Practice according to the American! Nurses Association. The incumbent will have direct reporting ! relationship to the Supervising Physician, the Alternate Supervising Physician or a designated attending physician.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Essential Functions of the Job:
 Perform and document comprehensive health history and physical and functional assessments for all new and follow up neurosurgical patients. Documentation includes history of present illness, physical assessment, related patient teaching, follow up care, coordination of health care needs, and/or referral of identified problems.
 Prepare and dictate out patient clinic notes.
 Coordinate care of clinic patients including making appropriate referrals, ordering diagnostic studies, and coordinating surgical procedures.
 Perform minor office procedures.
 Organize and review radiological studies received for consultation. Contact patient and referring physician with results and treatment plan.
 Coordinate patient care of hospitalized ! patients. Participates in the daily management of patient care including initiating appropriate laboratory, radiological and special examinations or tests required for the evaluation of illness. Also includes participating in the multidisciplinary care of patients.
 Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic studies, including laboratory tests, x-rays, etc., within the scope of practice. Notify and explain results of tests to patients.
 Serve as a resource to referring physicians/staff/patients/families regarding questions from and/or concerning both inpatients and outpatients.
 Respond to phone calls from neurosurgical patients with questions, concerns, or problems. Assess situation and consult with supervising physician when necessary.
 Provide follow-up care including the appropriate adjustment of medications in accordance with established protocols or in response to specific instructions from supervising physician.
 Inform and teach pati! ents and families about planned surgical or diagnostic procedures, heal! th promotion/disease prevention activities, medications and treatments, and assist with the development of teaching materials for patients and families.
 Maintain familiarity with coding, documentation, and fraud and abuse issues related to compensation.
 Collect patient data as requested by supervising physician.

 Identify areas related to Neurosurgery that require classification or advancement through the research process. Participate in medical and nursing research projects.
 Participate in activities that contribute to the education of other health care professionals, serve as a preceptor for nursing and medical students and develop/present educational programs to the medical and nursing staff.
 Work collaboratively with the team to promote and coordinate effective working relationships with the community, health care agencies, and civic groups.
 Participate in activities that enhance professional development.

Non-Essential Functions of the Job:
 Participate in daily rounds with residents and attending physician.
 Obtain authorization for referrals for a patient’s PCP if required by the patient’s insurance company.
 Schedule, post, and coordinate patient’s surgery with support staff.
 Scheduling of patient appointments in scheduling system.
 Performs other tasks as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):Education:
 Master’s degree in nursing; Nurse Practitioner Degree
 Licensed as a Registered Nurse and as a Nurse Practitioner by the State of Virginia
 Nurse Practitioner Authorization to Prescribe License

Experience:
 2-3 years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner in a neurosurgical environment or health care setting

Knowledge and skills:
 Basic knowledge of and experience utilizing a personal computer
 Basic! word processing skills
