Essential Functions:

  • Creatively facilitates the adult learning process by creating an appropriate climate for learning.
  • Emphasizes the development and use of critical thinking skills in order to promote clinical excellence.
  • Manages all perioperative staff education and competency programs to include planning, implementation, promotion, scheduling, instruction and coordination of the documentation process for both new and on-going programs and initiatives.
  • Assures that educational programs support compliance with all regulatory and MASHP standards.
  • In collaboration with the quality & sustainability consultant, regularly updates departmental nursing practices to reflect the most current evidence-based standards.
  • Coordinates the development, implementation and evaluation of those standards as well as policies and procedures for patient care.

  • Participates in departmental equipment selection, monitor! s proper use and ensures staff are educated on new and existing equipment.
  • Effectively coaches perioperative staff members serving in mentorship roles and participates in the orientation process for new nurses.
  • Provides direction and offers alternate teaching/learning strategies when indicated.
  • Assists in identifying learning needs and formulates goals to improve skill development.
  • Serves as a role model for clinical excellence in patient care.
  • Provides real-time coaching to staff as appropriate and follows-up with formal educational offerings as indicated.
  • Participates in the overall quality improvement/process improvement plan for perioperative services.
  • Identifies potential areas for assessment, performs data collection, analyzes data against benchmark measures and assists in plans/solutions to solve problems and/or improve processes.
  • Actively participates in regional committees, teams and task force! s as a representative for perioperative services.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional growth and development, setting annual goals for continuing education and maintenance of clinical expertise.
  • Works with the perioperative service leaders to develop departmental goals and objectives and assists in the implementation plan.
  • Performs other related duties as directed.
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
  • Five (5) years of recent operating room nursing or pre-operative/PACU experience to include the care of both pediatric and adult surgical patients required.
  • Experience in and understanding of health care delivery in an ambulatory setting required.
  • Master's degree in nursing or nursing education required.
  • RN License for DC and a compact state (ex. Maryland, Virginia) required.
  • Current BLS certification is required.
  • Current ACLS certification is required within thr! ee (3) months of employment.
  • Current PALS certification is req! uired within six months (6) of employment.
  • CNOR or CPAN certification is required within three months (3) of employment.
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills required.
  • Excellent writing skills required.
  • Must be able to work effectively with a variety of departments and leadership levels.
  • Must demonstrate exceptional customer service attitudes, including a "can do" approach.
  • Must be able to independently problem-solve and develop creative solutions.
  • Must be a champion for innovation and change.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • One (1) year of education/training experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in ambulatory surgery centers preferred.
  • Experience in managed care setting preferred.
  • Experience in policy and/or nursing competency development strongly preferred.
  • Doctoral degree in nursing or related field preferred.
  • Underst! anding of nursing regulatory and scope of practice requirements strongly preferred.
