ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER I

Location: Fairfax Virginia

Description: Fairfax County Government is hiring ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER I right now, this vacancy will be placed in Virginia. Provides law enforcement and public safety services to the community with regards to state and local animal control, game laws, and ordinances. Patrols designated areas, using department vehicle. Apprehe! nds stray animals (domestic and agricultural); rescues sick or injured wild and domestic animals. Coordinates with county Health Department to investigate incidents of animal bites and human exposure. Evaluates and investigates cases of alleged animal cruelty. Issues uniform summonses and testifies in court. Position requires shift and weekend work.

Minimum

Qualifications:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation or a G.E.D. issued by a state department of education.

Special

Requirements:
Certificates and Licenses Required:
Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license at the time of appointment. Certification of successful completion of a basic animal control course as approved by the Code of Virginia. By the end of the probationary period, must possess the following: certification as a Law Enforcement Officer by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Se! rvices;
certification in firearms proficiency;
certifi! cation in chemical immobilization;
certification in euthanasia.

Necessary Special Requirements:
Must be within 180 days of 21st birthday at time of application. Must be a U.S. citizen. Must be able to obtain a Class A medical rating in the assigned medical group prior to appointment. Must be favorably evaluated subsequent to a background investigation, a polygraph examination, a physical ability test and a psychological examination administered prior to appointment. Must never have been convicted of a felony, serious misdemeanor, or any offense that under federal or Virginia law would prohibit the applicant from possessing a firearm. Requires successful completion of required Field Training; must successfully complete Fairfax County Law Enforcement Academy training courses determined to be appropriate by the Fairfax County Police Department for Animal Control
Officer I positions within one year of appointment. Must be of good character and reputa! tion. Incumbents shall not use any tobacco products on and off duty starting at the time of appointment. The incumbent must be willing to sign a Condition of Employment Agreement acknowledging the prohibition of the use of tobacco products both on and off duty.
Subsequent to a conditional job offer, applicants must take and pass a comprehensive medical examination, including drug testing and a vision standard not worse then 20/200, provided that there have been at least three months of success wearing soft contact lenses. Without soft contact lenses, uncorrected vision cannot be worse than 20/100. Prior to receiving a medical classification, recipients of LASIK surgery and Radial Keratotomy (RK) are subject to a minimum waiting period of three months and six months, respectively. All vision must be corrected to 20/20. Color blindness may be corrected by soft contacts, subjected to the same restrictions above.

Preferred

Qualifications:
Prior ! training in animal control or animal health. Other previous law enforce! ment or military experience.

Selection

Procedure:
All applicants must successfully pass a physical ability test and panel interview. Highly qualified applicants will receive further processing, which will include a comprehensive background investigation and polygraph examination.

To be appointed, those listed as eligible shall meet Class A medical standards, be free of disciplinary actions that impact promotional ability and be in accordance with SOP 04-007 Competitive Promotional Process.
