DUTIES:
Duties: The Physician Assistant (Cardiothoracic) is assigned to Surgical Service at the VAMC in Richmond, Virginia and p rovides medical and surgical care for both inpatients and outpatients in the SICU and surgical ward. The Physician Assistant assists in managing patients that often have complex medical problems and are multi-symptomatic. The Physician Assistant shall coordinate patient care programs based upon the admitting chief complaint and may perform the following duties:

First assists with adult cardiac surgery including Ventricular Assist Device (VAD), transplant and thoracic program. Performs radial artery and saphenous vein harvesting. Performs chest tube insertion, thoracentesis, central line placement, and balloon pump removal.

The Physician Assistant (CT) also performs routine clinical duties:

Admission History and physicals, admission orders, aftercare plans and discharge summaries. Provide medical education /counseling of patients and their families. Primary responsibility for admissions and medical care of patients when the resident on the service is absent. Assist the surgeon in the operating room, including prepping and draping, and first or second assist in surgery. Promote patient care programs for the CT Surgery Section and periodically update them based upon current and new concepts, research as well as findings of the attending physician. Integrates the activities of the CT Surgery Service with other patient care programs at the facility.

The Physician Assistant (CT) is also responsible for administrative assignments:

Evaluates CT Surgery Consults and determines the appropriate disposition, routing and priority of those consults.

Facilitates access to the CT Surgery team for other Health Care Providers.

Participates in quality assurance program with a multi-disciplinary group-developing criterion for administrative goals in the section.

Individual may function as non-physician coordinator for CT Surgery clinics as deemed appropriate by the Chief of CT Surgery.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and education/determined by Physician Assistant Professional Standards Board.

Work schedule: Monday- Friday 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m, with rotating weekend coverage.

On-call: One week on, two (2) weeks off.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS :
Education/Training -

A bachelor's degree from a Physician Assistant training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); OR,

Graduation from a Physician Assistant training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; OR,

Graduation from a Physician Assistant training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician. The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.

CERTIFICATION: As of March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment. This requirement does not apply to non-certified Physician Assistants on VA rolls as of that date.

Intermediate Grade -

Approximately 4 years of Physician Assistant practice characterized by leadership in improving patient care; demonstrated ability to work effectively with others; and, proficiency in working in one of the following four groups:

Clinical Skills - assesses, plans, implements, documents and evaluates patient care, with such expertise as to be recognized by others. Managerial Skills - assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the delivery of patient care, and, analyzes and resolves problems that impede the delivery of patient care and services. Instructional Skills - assesses, plans, implements, documents and evaluates educational activities; and, encourages active participation of learners in meeting their own needs. Research Skills - under the supervisory guidance of the managing physician, accepts professional responsibly for a scientific investigation expected to result in a publishable addition to scientific knowledge.

OR

A bachelor's degree from a PA training program which is certified by the ARC-PA and practice as a PA which demonstrates behaviors such as those described in paragraph (1) above. Generally, an individual with the education in this paragraph can demonstrate these behaviors after approximately 3 years of practice as a PA.

OR

Master's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science and a baccalaureate degree from a PA training program which is certified by the ARC-PA; and practice as a PA which demonstrates behaviors such as those described in paragraph (1) above. Generally, an individual with the education described in this paragraph can demonstrate these behaviors after approximately 2 years of practice as a PA.

OR

Master's degree from a PA training program which is certified by the ARC-PA; and practice as a PA which demonstrates behaviors such as those described in paragraph (1) above. Generally, an individual with the education described in this paragraph can demonstrate these behaviors after approximately 2 years of practice as a PA.

OR

Doctoral degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science and a baccalaureate or masters degree from a PA training program which is certified by the ARC-PA.

Senior Grade -

Approximately 6 years of Physician Assistant practice characterized by leadership in improving patient care; demonstrated ability to work effectively with others; and, proficiency in working in one of the following four groups:

Clinical Skills - assesses, plans, implements, documents and evaluates patient care, with such expertise as to be sought by others. Administration - initiates changes in the system for delivering patient care based on current concepts and findings from research/studies and develops staff for patient care leadership assignments. Education - assesses, plans, implements, coordinates and evaluates educational programs and activities; initiates change in education programs based on current concepts and findings from research/studies; provides guidance to others involved in the delivery of the education program. Research Skills - designs and conducts scientific inquiry; promotes and assists others in the application of findings from research/studies and directs others in research activity; contributes through conducting scientifically meritorious inquiry and publishable findings.

OR

A Bachelor's degree from a PA training program certified by the CAAHP; and successful practice as a PA which demonstrates behaviors such as those in paragraph (1) above. Generally, an individual with the education in this paragraph can demonstrate these behaviors after approximately 5 years of practice as a PA.

OR

Master's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science and a bachelor's degree from a PA training program certified by the CAAHP; and successful practice as a PA which demonstrates the behaviors such as those in paragraph (1) above. Generally, an individual with the education in this paragraph can demonstrate these after approximately 4 years of practice as a PA.

OR

Master's degree from a PA training program certified by the CAAHP; and successful practice as a PA which demonstrates the behaviors such as those in paragraph (1) above. Generally, an individual with the education described in this paragraph can demonstrate these behaviors after approximately 4 years of practice as a PA.

OR

Doctoral degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science and a bachelor's or masters degree from a PA training program certified by the CAAHP; and successful practice as a PA which demonstrates the behaviors such as those in paragraph (1) above. Generally, an individual with the education in this paragraph can demonstrate these behaviors after approximately 2 years of practice as a PA.
